WORKING ON NEW MATERIAL
10/10/2011
Thursday January the 19th I will be playing a four channel tape piece at one of the Weerzin evenings in Amsterdam. De Weerzin is an evening full of music, poetry, performance and dance. More info can be found here.

The 'Binckhorst' is an industrial area of about 130 hectare located in Den Haag. There are some factories, offices and a harbor.

As a result of a workshop on field-recording and sound-installations given by Justin Bennett, we are making a soundmap of the Binckhorst. This means we are going out with recording equipment to record as much as interesting sounds that characterize the area.
Being out in the field with a pair of hydrophones, I recorded a carbridge located at the end (or the beginning) of the Binckhorstlaan. Hydrophones are waterproof microphones made for recordings underwater. Instead I used them as contact microphones, microphones who pick up sound when they touch a surface, in this case the bridge.

I am currently working on a few new pieces together with Fani Konstantinidou. During the summer we recorded the sound of a gong, tibetan bells and a singing bowl, to use as the source material for our music. At the moment we are processing these recordings and trying to find an interesting way to combine our sound material. In May we will present some of our works at Studio Loos.

A few years ago I found an old cassette player. There was a casette inside with a recording of a piano concert. I don't know who the composer or player is. The casette player is in a bad condition which I like because it sounds more authentic. I decided to make a tape loop out of a part I liked. A few days ago I recorded the loop and started working with it.
I have decided to limit myself by only using this particular recording and by mainly using granular synthesis to modify the sound. I want to keep the low-fi feeling of the tape in my final composition.

The pianoloop can be found here:
